Scarecrow Fest has been Cancelled

Well, the rain got the better of us and we've decided to cancel Scarecrow Fest this Saturday due to the dreary forecast. While we're really sorry to have to do this, we will be holding a mini-Scarecrow Fest at the Woodstock Farm Festival this Wednesday, October 5 from 3:30 pm - 6 pm.

While we're still organizing this new iteration of the festival, we think Deb Tankard & Friends will be playing, Loren and Shirley Rose will be doing a canning demonstration, Fiber Flame will be doing crafts, Fruition Chocolate Works will be wowing us with handcrafted chocolate and Heather Longyear will be doing a story hour with crafts. And of course, everyone's scarecrows will be on display.

Check www.woodstocklandconservancy.org for updates over the weekend. But come on out either way - the Farm Festival is always fun!

Scarecrow Fest is this Saturday

Join the Woodstock Land Conservancy and the Woodstock Farm Festival on the Zena Cornfield (that's 914 Zena Road in Woodstock) this Saturday, October 1, 10 am - 4 pm for food, music, and fun including Farm Olympics, crafts, storytelling, puppet theatre with the Ivy Vine Players, food preservation and cooking demonstrations, and the Bindlestiff Family Cirkus! All this and more is in addition to our Scarecrow exhibition displaying the Scarecrows made by your friends and neighbors.

Q&A with filmmaker Severine von Tscharner Fleming and local young farmers to follow

Woodstock, NY – The Greenhorns, a national grassroots nonprofit organization of young farmers, will premiere their much-anticipated documentary film, “The Greenhorns,” at the Colony Café in Woodstock on Tuesday October 4th, 2011 at 7pm. The screening will be followed by a discussion with filmmaker Severine von Tscharner Fleming and local farmers.

"The Greenhorns" documents the reemergence of a key cultural and economic force--the young American farmer. Despite a longstanding trend of farmer attrition and aging (the average age of a farmer in America is 57), and the continued rapid loss of farmland to development, this film shows how communities are experiencing a resurgence of activity among young, new and aspiring farmers.

“The Greenhorns” reveals how a new generation of young agrarians is working to reverse these trends by rebuilding local and regional foodsheds, revitalizing rural economies, and providing healthy food for all --one farm at a time. Although they face many hurdles, including access to land and costs, official mandates calling for the increase and successful resettlement of young farmers while farmland remains abundant is an encouraging sign. Now we need policies to back up that goal. With over 400 million acres of farmland poised to change hands over the next twenty years, the time for action is NOW. The 2012 Farm Bill package of legislation is already in the pipeline. “The Greenhorns” provides context, reveals the issues, and introduces the viewer to a savvy, enterprising group of young farmers who are rolling up their sleeves and getting into the business of fixing America--one farmer at a time.

Co-sponsored by the Woodstock Farm Festival and the Woodstock Land Conservancy, this film continues their joint efforts to foster discussion about sustainable agriculture and the importance of supporting local food and farmers.

Directed by farmer/ activist Severine von Tscharner Fleming, produced in dozens of states over three years, “The Greenhorns” runs a fast 50 minutes. Part of the proceeds will go to "http://www.help-the-farm.org/" RSK Farm, a local farm in Prattsville devastated by hurricane Irene. Tickets will be available at the door, Colony Café 22 Rock City Road, Woodstock. Donation is suggested.

About the Greenhorns:

The Greenhorns national non-profit organization recruits, supports and promotes young farmers in America. Using radio, blogs, film, new media, original resources and live events, the Greenhorns build agrarian culture by connecting young farmers with land, resources and each other. We are based on a farm in the Hudson Valley of New York State.

About the Woodstock Farm Festival:

The Woodstock Farm Festival is a weekly farmers’ market that features twenty local vendors/farmers selling a wide variety locally grown produce, meats, grains, wines, dairy & cheeses, etc. In addition, the festival features a unique outdoor dining area with free live music and performances where vendors provide ready to eat meals that have been prepared using local meats and produce to market shoppers. Now in its 4th season, the Woodstock Farm Festival operates on Wednesdays 3:30 pm – dusk from June 1st – Oct. 26th. If it’s Wednesday, it’s Woodstock!

Sharp Cheddar & Honeycrisp Apple Sandwich

One of the sandwiches that was served at the Talk with Joel Salatin of Polyface Farm yesterday. We’re so proud of the diversity and quality of ingredients that the Hudson Valley has to offer.

Ingredients:

3 oz Sharp Cheddar Cheese – sliced
1 Honeycrisp Apple – cored and sliced
1/4 Cup Cranberry-Horseradish Chutney
1/2 Cup Pea Shoots
4 Slices Wheat Bread

Directions:

Spread the cranberry chutney on each slice of bread. Add the cheese, then a handful of pea shoots, the sliced apple, and a few more pea shoots. Close the sandwich. Slice and serve.

Makes 2 sandwiches

The Woodstock Land Conservancy and the Woodstock Farm Festival are excited to announce an upcoming seminar featuring renowned farmer and speaker Joel Salatin of Polyface Farm.

A humorous and dynamic speaker, Joel will talk about importance of local food to our economy, our environment, and our health, and have you thinking about food in a whole new way.

If you're interested in sustainable agriculture, or just want to make more informed choices about the food you eat, you won't want to miss this program.

Joel is a pioneer in the field of sustainable agriculture and a passionate defender of local food systems. He and his farm have been featured in the movies Food, Inc. and Fresh as well as Michael Pollan's book, The Omnivore's Dilemma. You can read more about Joel and Polyface Farm here.

Zucchini Eggplant Pepper Contest

In the second part of August, Red Onion sponsored another recipe contest, this time the key ingredients were a choice of zucchini, eggplant, and peppers. In the first week, Chef Kevin served up a big pan of roasted and baked squash and tomato something. He told me the name of it, but it was so good my mind went to mush and I forgot the name.

The next week, there were some tasty entries, but the winner, which I tasted and I can attest to its deliciousness, was Robin Blier's pizza, made with caramelized onions and goat cheese.

Tomatoes Recipes and Corn Recipes

July 28, Tomato Recipe winner: Bruschetta, submitted by the very busy Barbara Hirth-Strauss who was not present for her winner's photograph. She did collect her gift certificate from Bistro To Go.

The next recipe contest featured corn, and the new judge on the scene was Kevin from Red Onion ( east of town on Route 212). Kevin cooked up, en place, a lovely corn and bacon and mushroom and butter and butter and butter something, something like a sauce. Whatever it was called, it was really tasty.

One week later....

August 11: We had many many creative and delicious corn recipes, including chili corn muffins, cornbread, corn pudding, homemade corn tortilla tacos, and more. Here is Chef Kevin, and his sous-chef son Jonah, considering the entries.

The winner involved chocolate and was called Cocoa Corn:

Roasted Corn with butter, topped with melted chocolate with chilis. Of course I tried it and it was delish.

So Many Recipes!

June 30 was our Strawberries recipe contest, and the winner, with a wonderful Summer Strawberry Salad, was the mother-daughter team of Jackie and Gianna Stancarone. Here are the winners with their blue ribbon, receiving a $50 gift certificate from Amanda at the Tea Shop, which is right on Maple Lane and open during the farm festival every week.

Jackie and Gianna made a simple recipe that you can read right on this photo.

Our next recipe contest featured peaches. Here is Barbara Bogart from Touché Restaurant, with her super- delicious peach offering: a peach compote on a toasted bread with garlic and blue cheese. Mmmm.

The following week saw the biggest recipe contest to date, with nearly four thousand entries. Actually, there were nine entries, but that's still a lot considering that this is a brand new farm festival program this season. The winner was young Gianna Stancarone, with Peach-Pomegranate Salsa, claiming her second victory in as many weeks. Lookout Woodstock, here comes our next celebrity chef! Here she is with her blue ribbon and gift certificate and Barbara from Touché Restaurant, which sponsored this contest:

Many people at the festival brought their own forks and spoons after the judging and tasted the contest entries, and some recipes were requested. So, here are some photos of the peach contest entries, and some of the recipes:

So much for peaches- on to tomatoes!

On July 21, Bistro To Go (North side of Route 28 between Woodstock and Kingston) came up to the festival to offer their take on tomatoes. In the raw form, a gazpacho with zing:

(It is never too early to start tasting gazpacho.)

In the cooked form, a sweet tomato jam that they served in small pastry cups with some chicken salad underneath the jam:

What does this mean to you? It means that next week, July 28, come to the farm festival armed with your best tomato recipe, enough to feed one judge just enough to fall in love with it, and you could walk away with a gift certificate for $50 from Bistro To Go.

Bar Scott leading Woodstock, Sing! A Community Sing-Along Bar Scott is known in these parts as a performing song writer, but in the winter of 2009, she started a monthly sing-along for members of the Woodstock Community. She brought the idea to the farm festival last summer and it was a huge hit. So, we’re doing it again this year. We'll sing all kinds of songs including Rock, Pop, Gospel, Beatles, Show, Folk - it's all good fun, and the un-hip factor is wonderfully high!

Music in the Farmers’ Market:

Mamalama - Mamalama weaves together both modern and ancient musical culture through the sounds of traditional harp, violin/chincello, hammered dulcimer, cello, hurdy gurdy, native flutes, and other world-folk instrument coloration. A hypnotic song form with sweetly haunting female vocals, Mamalama is a collision of chapel-like ambience within the momentum of African rhythm, all the while tumbling around in ancient Greek modality. Perry Beekman – Perry is a guitarist & vocalist deeply rooted in the classic tradition of jazz. His repertoire features tunes from the Great American Songbook, many of which comprised the repertoires of such greats as Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra and Mel Torme. Leafy Greens Contest: Winning Recipe

Bok Choy: Hot, Sweet, Quick, Simple

Prepare
Cut and sliver ginger
Grate ginger, squeeze out the juice into bowl of raisins, mix juice with raisins. Let sit a while before cooking.
Mix together: 2 Tbsp of Tahini, 2 tsp. of honey, 2 Tbsp. of tamari.

Cook
Heat skillet, put on some olive oil and fry slivered ginger.
they will cluster and brown, just as they brown add 1/2 tsp. honey and stir around.
Add chopped bok choy, stir fry.
When Bok Choy is a bright green, stir in raisins, and tahini mix, stir and place a lid, lower flame after a minute. Let sit in steam.

Fresh Peas with Green Garlic & Prosciutto

Migliorelli Farm joins the Woodstock Farm Festival this year. On opening day this past Wednesday they had a big bushel of fresh shell peas for sale and they also had bunches of green garlic. Here’s a recipe that uses both of them. It comes together pretty easily once the peas have been shelled.

Ingredients:

1/2 Tbsp Olive Oil
1/2 Tbsp Butter
1 Bulb Green Garlic – thinly sliced
1 Slice Prosciutto – thinly sliced
1 Cup of Shelled Fresh Peas
1/4 Cup Water
Freshly Ground Black Pepper

Directions:

Heat the olive oil and butter in a saute pan. Add the green garlic and prosciutto and cook until both are golden. Stir in the peas and add the water. Cook until the peas are tender but still bright green and the water has reduced to create a sauce, about 3-4 minutes. Add several grinds of fresh black pepper.

Plans are underway for the 3rd season of the Woodstock Farm Festival which will kick off on Wednesday, May 26th at 3pm. This year promises to bring an even wider array of locally grown produce and our special events schedule is filled with top-notch local performers, children’s activities, workshops, demonstrations and a whole lot more.
But we need your help. The festival operates as a not-for-profit and, as such, relies on grants, sponsors and individual contributions to make it all a reality. Your support is essential. We are painfully aware of tight budgets but we ask you to still please consider a donation. Donations of any amount will help to ensure a successful season.
We hope that you will join your friends and neighbors by becoming a sponsor of the Woodstock Farm Festival!

BLUESTONE
Blustone is a group that is from the Woodstock/Saugertiesa area. It consists of Jeanne Weiss, Ernie Mortuzans, Debbi Adelman and Wayne Nord. There are four vocalists with two guitars.

Our music is a lot of old and new folk with a country rock flavor featuring four-part harmony. That includes songs by John Prine, The Everly Brothers, Mark Knopfler, Sam Cooke, the Rolling Stones, Hank Williams, Karla Bonoff, Bob Dylan and many more.
